Virginia designer’s HBCU clothing brand lands in department stores

Ashley Jones graduated from Norfolk Point out College again in 2015 and resolved to concentration on filling the hole when it came to fashionable faculty garments. She released Tones of Melanin in 2017.

Ashley Jones graduated from Norfolk State University back again in 2015 and made a decision to emphasis on filling the hole when it arrived to trendy college or university clothing. She introduced Tones of Melanin in 2017.

“When I went into my bookstore, I did not genuinely see nearly anything that represented my populace. I actually want to highlight the HBCU tradition,” reported Jones, referring to Historically Black Schools and Universities.

The line at some point caught the attention of major stores. Her creations are now in Belk office shops, HBCU bookstores and Dick’s Sporting Items.

“It all occurred genuinely quickly. I’m hoping to get more stores in the years to arrive,” added Jones. “I sense like we have our own group and I’m building that more substantial for the entire world to see.”

Jones claimed the murder of George Floyd contributed to her business enterprise receiving additional recognition and help alongside the social justice movement. HBCUs have also been given extra awareness in the final couple a long time.

“I’m hoping this is not just a fad, I’m hoping it is a long term thing. We’re adequately skilled and the training is top rated-notch,” added Jones.

She claims she hopes to see much more younger creatives continue to be real to their vision. Her guidance? “Persevere and do your research. Be resourceful, that is us, we’re innovative as a persons.”
