There are many reasons why foreheads are larger, including genetics, hair loss, and cosmetic procedures. A hairline lowering surgery – also known as a hairline reduction surgery – can help you balance your facial proportions. However, this procedure differs from brow raising surgery.

Learn how to find a cosmetic surgeon near you, including the risks of forehead reduction surgery, recovery time, and how to find a plastic surgeon who performs that surgery.

In what ways does forehead reduction work?

Anaesthesia is typically required for forehead reduction surgery. Local anaesthetics are also used to reduce bleeding and pain around the forehead area.

Flowchart

The following steps will be taken by your plastic surgeon during the procedure:

  1. A surgical skin marker will be used to mark the hairline and area of the forehead that will be removed. Hair follicles and nerves are carefully preserved by the cut along the hairline.
  2. With local anaesthetic, the entire forehead is numbed from the hairline to just above the eyebrows.
  3. Pretrichial incisions are made along the marked forehead area and hairline. In order to remove the skin, the surgeon carefully separates it from the connective tissue beneath and cuts it out.
  4. In addition to the hairline incision, the forehead incision is also pulled down to meet the top incision. Thus, the forehead gap is closed and shortened.
  5. As the hair grows back, the sutured skin is almost completely covered by the hairline, which minimizes scar formation.

As noted, forehead reduction surgery may change the appearance of the eyebrows and reduce the height of the forehead, but it does not necessarily raise the eyebrows.

The hairline lowering surgery can be performed simultaneously with a separate procedure called a brow lift, if necessary.

Recovering

Within a few hours after surgery, most people are able to go home. The sutures will need to be removed over the next week and a half. Observation and follow-up appointments are scheduled roughly 2 to 4 weeks after surgery.

The wound should be kept clean and allowed to heal properly after any surgery that involves an incision.

The site of the incision should be checked frequently for signs of infection. You will also receive postoperative instructions from your doctor regarding how to properly care for your surgery incision, including how to reduce swelling, pain, and infection risk.

Is forehead reduction surgery right for me?

By reducing the size of the forehead, one can balance the proportions of their overall facial structure. A forehead reduction may be beneficial to someone with:

  • You want to lower your hairline because you have a high hairline
  • Would you like to shorten your forehead if you have a large one
  • Hair that is too thick for your hairline
  • Your face is too narrow or heavy due to low or heavy eyebrows.
  • Want to increase your hairline following a hair grafting procedure
  • Are you planning to bring forward your hairline after a brow lift procedure

Despite these factors, however, not every patient can undergo forehead reduction surgery.

The ability to stretch your scalp tissues is required before you can successfully undergo a forehead reduction surgery. You may not be a good candidate for forehead reduction surgery if you have a family history of pattern balding.

Before undergoing surgery, you should discuss with your doctor if you have any other medical conditions that would place you at risk for complications.
